Football and cinema have always had a somewhat rocky relationship. The game that inspires millions of fans around the world has generally had a difficult time translating this magical quality to the silver screen, particularly stumbling in scenes where the game itself is being played. Perhaps this is why scriptwriters and directors favour projects that have more character-driven, dramatic content and stories, with football as merely a backdrop to these narratives.
Ellen Perry’s Will appears to be one of these films. Set in Liverpool in 2005, the titular 11 year-old boy’s (Perry Eggleton) life is turned upside down when his long-absent father (Damian Lewis) reappears with tickets to the Champions League Final in Istanbul. But when fate intervenes, Will runs away to Istanbul for the biggest soccer match of the year, searching for meaning in a world that seems to have abandoned
him.
Starring Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers, The Escapist), Bob Hoskins (A Christmas Carol, Who Framed Roger Rabbit) and Alice Krige (Chariots of Fire, Star Trek: First Contact) this heartfelt underdog story also features cameos by Liverpool Football Club manager Kenny Dalglish, and players Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard.
Will: You’ll Never Walk Alone is due for UK release on 21st October 2011.
