The Avengers Trailer

The Avengers poster Whedon Evans Downey Hiddleston Ruffalo Renner Hemsworth Skarsgard Johansson Jackson 2012 MarvelWith just 7 short months to wait until May 2012 is upon us, the curtain-raiser for next year’s blockbuster season has made a move. Today, Marvel Studios released the first full-length trailer for The Avengers. Directed by Joss Whedon, it draws together a plethora of heroic individuals who have starred in the Marvel films of the past few years (more accurately since Marvel Studios began making its own, starting with 2008′s Iron Man) to essentially form a supergroup.

Returning to our screens are Robert Downey Jr. as the aforementioned Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as the mighty Thor, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawk-Eye (who featured in Thor), Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Joining the ever-growing list of men to have played the role, Mark Ruffalo has been installed as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, despite the relative success of Edward Norton’s turn in 2008. Familiar supporting cast include Stellan Skarsgård as Professor Erik Selvig and Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony Stark’s long-suffering assistant Pepper Potts. The villain of the piece has been revealed as Thor’s devious brother Loki, once again played by Tom Hiddleston.

The trailer (below, thanks to ComingSoon.net) is brimming with action and pyrotechnics, as we hear Jackson’s Nick Fury calling together the members of the team for what is angled as the most epic of battles. Along the way each character is given a visual showcase and Downey Jr. is, of course, afforded a couple of one-liners to reassure fans of the charasmatic Stark. While not giving away too much of the plot specifics, it is the expected Marvel blend of action set-pieces, drama and comic book wit.

The Avengers is scheduled for UK release on 4th May 2012.
