The creation of Picasso’s legendary ‘Guernica’ painting is to be portrayed in a new film starring Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.
33 Days (a reference to the amount of time spent on the creation the painting) will focus on the emotional difficulties that Picasso went through at the time, both in his personal life, and in relation to the events that inspired him to paint ‘Guernica.’
The famous painting, which is considered both a masterpiece of Picasso’s career and of the twentieth century art scene in general, portrays the destruction and horror of the Luftwaffe bombing of the eponymous town during the Spanish civil war of the late thirties. It has been credited with bringing the Civil War to the attention of people who knew nothing about it, as well
The film will shoot this summer, and will be directed by Spanish director Carlos Saura – although probably the most exciting news is that the cinematography will be handled by Vittorio Storaro – a three times Oscar winner who has worked on Apocalypse Now, Reds, and The Conformist, among others. Storaro’s brilliant work on The Conformist (which is also set in the thirties and deals with the effects of fascism, albeit in a different way) should guarantee the film looks amazing, at the very least.
Banderas gave a signal that 33 Days is a very personal project for him in an interview with a Spanish newspaper recently:
He is a character that has pursued me for a long time. I am from Malaga, and he was born four blocks from where I was born
The Spanish and French language film will begin production this summer.
